Élékere Press began with a question: why are the most important African literary voices still found, published, and praised from elsewhere, and always on someone else’s clock?
Élékere is the Igbo word for the hour hand of the clock. We chose it because the hour hand asks no one’s permission to strike. It keeps its own time. That is what we want for African and Black writing everywhere: stories told on our own clock, from our own soil, in our own voice.
We are a Pan-African boutique press celebrating Black voices and stories across the world. We publish work that is not afraid to shine and will not wait its turn.
